Overalls,
Red Serge
and Robes, by Harry Hampton Aimé and Northern Memories by Marjorie
Irene Aimé offer the stories and experiences of two lifetimes of
adventure in the Canadian north. Hampton
Press is very pleased to present these two
books that convey a lifestyle that has all but disappeared.
The unique perspectives from these exciting books will bring back
memories to old Northerners and a new generation of readers will
certainly appreciate stories of times gone by. Both books are
extensively illustrated with photos and sketches.
Overalls,
Red Serge, and Robes
By Harry Hampton Aimé
As a young farm boy in Clandeboye,
Manitoba, Harry admired the fascinating exploits and
adventures of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He signed up as a
young man and spent the next 25 years with the RCMP. His career
included many years in Canada's north. In and around Fort Rae, he
was able to witness Native traditions and values in an era when most
of the Native people lived year-round in tents, prior to the
tremendous cultural upheaval - and the dramatic changes - of
the twentieth century.
In 1947 to 1949, while stationed at
the newly established joint Canadian-American weather stations in
the eastern Arctic, Constable Harry Aimé opened the RCMP's Resolute Bay
detachment and travelled with the US Air Force to the joint
satellite stations and to Thule, Greenland. His career then took him
again to the Northwest Territories to Fort Liard, Fort Smith and
Aklavik. After leaving the north, Harry spent ten years with the
RCMP in Alberta on highway traffic duty in Vegreville and as traffic
supervisor in Lethbridge. Upon retiring in 1965, Sergeant Aimé went
back up north, accepting an appointment as the first stipendiary
Magistrate in Fort McMurray, an office he held for 23 years.
Throughout his years as a judge of
the provincial court of Alberta, Harry also held the appointments of
Citizen Court Judge and Marriage Commissioner. After retiring in
1988, Harry spent a number of years publishing the biography of his
parents, writing his autobiography, and doing volunteer work. Judge
Aimé now resides in Red Deer, Alberta, with his wife, Marjorie.
A fine collection of
memories of the Canadian North, Northern Memories truly reflects the
author's own unique voice.
Northern Memories describes the
adventures of a young Canadian woman, who heads North - from a small
town in Manitoba - alone. The year is 1941. Her adventures and
impressions tell of sled dogs, the northern lights, and the land of
the midnight sun.
Surviving a winter camping trip while
pregnant, coping alone with a house on fire, and watching the flood
waters race up to the cabin are only a few of the experiences
Marjorie Irene Aimé writes about.
Along the way, she gathered fond
memories, lifelong friends, and unusual coping skills. She took part
in hilarious happenings and frightening experiences. And she faced
personal tragedy. To this day, after retiring "down south"
to northern Alberta, she still gets a lonely feeling when she hears
the call of the wild geese flying south.
"You have to finish your book,
Grandma, because it isn't everyone who has a grandmother who used to
drive her own dog team!"
